In order to determine whether the Gyanvapi Masjid was constructed atop an earlier Hindu temple, the Varanasi District Court ordered ASI to conduct a thorough study of the structure on Friday.
Despite the mosque management committee having petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn the Varanasi district court’s judgment allowing the inspection, a team from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will start a survey of the Gyanvapi mosque on Monday, according to persons with knowledge of the situation on Sunday.
The Varanasi district court ordered a thorough assessment of the Gyanvapi Masjid by ASI on Friday in order to determine whether the mosque was constructed atop a previous Hindu temple. The court reasoned that the scientific inquiry is “necessary” for the “true facts” to emerge. The Supreme Court’s order to keep the part sealed since May 2022, however, was excluded by the court. Muslims contend it is a component of a fountain, but Hindus allege a Shivling has been discovered in the vicinity that is under seal.
“On Monday 24 July 2023, the ASI survey will start. According to S Rajalingam, the district magistrate for Varanasi, “all the parties, including the plaintiffs and defendants involved to the matter, have been informed about it.
